But they did so in controversial style, as Rashford slammed in his winning goal from the spot in the fourth minute of stoppage time after yet another delayed VAR decision.

The penalty was eventually awarded after Diogo Dalot’s speculative shot struck Presnel Kimpembe on the arm. And Englishman Halsey agrees, saying the penalty should NOT have been given.Speaking to Jim White at the opening of the new talkSPORT studios in London, the former ref explained: According to law 12, handball, the position of the hand of the arm doesnt necessarily mean an offence has been committed there has to be a deliberate movement of the hand or arm towards the ball.In order to use VAR, it has to be a clear and obvious error [by the referee]. Was that clear and obvious error last night? Its great Manchester United have gone through, but in my opinion, do we really want a game of that magnitude to end in the manner it ended in last night?Everything is silently checked. In that situation, for me, to become a top referee at that level you have to be mentally strong and if youve got anything about you, you look at that and say no its not a deliberate act. Thats not a deliberate handball in my opinion.The referee has made the call straight away and not given it, and I suppose he feels under pressure because the VAR has recommended to review it.We saw in the World Cup a couple of times where the referee reviewed the monitors and stuck to their original decision thats what we want to see.Would I have given it? No!
